Earth Day is coming up on Sunday, our annual reminder to protect our planet. As travelers, we’ve all experienced the beauty of nature, and recognize the importance of preserving it. So, here are 8 ways you can travel green this Earth Day, and every day.
1. Live local
Take the opportunity to really experience the place you’re visiting – eat and shop local. Transporting food and goods has an enormous impact on the environment, so reduce your carbon footprint by choosing the local markets and embracing the local culture.
2. Pack light
Unfortunately, airplanes contribute a lot to pollution. Heavy baggage also weighs down airplanes even more. Reduce your impact on the environment while traveling by packing light, and bringing only a carry-on for your flight!
3. Refuse the cleaning
Changing sheets and replacing towels daily uses up a lot of water and resources. If you’re staying in a hotel during your trip, you can use the “Do Not Disturb” sign to indicate that you don’t need your room cleaned.
4. Take public transport, bike, or walk
Reduce your carbon footprint (and save money) by skipping the cab fare, and instead opting for public transportation, or even better, biking or walking to your destination. If you really need to drive, consider carpooling with some other travelers – and make some friends in the process!
5. Bring a reusable water bottle
While hydration is essential while traveling, a plastic water bottle can take nearly 500 years to decompose. The solution: invest in a good reusable water bottle. It will help you save money and the environment in the long run!
6. Volunteer abroad
You can always find some time in your itinerary to give back! Volunteer to help plant trees, clean up nature reserves, or work with animals – there’s definitely something for everyone, and it’s a great way to show your support for the local community.
7. Travel with a reusable tote
Plastic bags take up to 1000 years to biodegrade! Always pack a reusable tote – it hardly takes up any space, and it has so many possible uses. Bring it with you while you’re wandering the streets of a new city, searching for souvenirs to take home.
8. Leave each place cleaner than you found it
Words to live by: “Take only photos; leave only footprints.” If you’re hiking or exploring a new place, remember to show your appreciation for nature by taking your trash with you, or even helping to pick up litter along the path.
