Known as ‘Hamptons of China’, Moganshan, historically, has appealed to foreign missionaries, Chinese gangsters such as Du Yuesheng and Zhangxiaolin, and high-profile politicians such as Chairman Mao and Chiang Kai-shek alike. It was founded and settled in the late 1800s by missionaries and their families to escape the summer heat and humidity in Shanghai.
Moganshan is famous for lush bamboo groves, green forests and mountains. Although currently a popular summer resort for tourists, it’s always possible to find a quiet spot or a tranquil village to hike around. On this trip, we will hike to the summit of the mountain next to Moganshan National Park and, after lunch, walk over to a village with a beautiful reservoir. (We might even have the chance to swim!)
